[New Book of Tang - Wen Tingyun Biography] ② A position placed in each prefecture at the beginning of the Meiji period to engage in police work. In 1873 ( Meiji 6 ), along with the control group and the police officers, they were all renamed "guards," and in 1874 they were made equivalent to the ranks of outside officials, and in 1875 they were given their old names again, and in the same year they were renamed "constables." ※Dajokan No. 553 - October 23, 1871 (Meiji 4), "3,000 patrolmen will be stationed in each prefecture to police the prefecture . 〘名〙① 見まわりの兵士。巡邏の兵卒。※随筆・秉燭譚(1729)五「京尹などの歴々の官人も、保卒邏卒のごとき賤役も通じて、これを所由と云と」 〔新唐書‐温庭筠伝〕② 明治の初め、各府県に置き、警察事務に従事させた職。明治六年(一八七三)取締組、捕亡吏などとともにすべて番人と改称し、同七年等外吏に准じ、同八年ふたたび旧名に復し、同年巡査と改称された。※太政官第五百五十三‐明治四年(1871)一〇月二三日「府下取締として邏卒三千人被二備置一候」
