Emperor Gohorikawa

Japanese: 後堀河天皇 - ごほりかわてんのう
Emperor Gohorikawa

An emperor in the early Kamakura period (reigned 1221-32). His name was Yutahito. He was the third son of Prince Morisada, the elder brother of Emperor Gotoba. His mother was Kitashirakawa-in Chinshi, the daughter of Fujiwara no Motoie. After Emperor Chukyo was deposed after the Jōkyū War in 1221, Go-Horikawa was forced to return to secular life and ascend to the throne with the support of the pro-Shogunate Saionji Kintsune and the support of the Shogunate. At that time, his father Morisada had already become a monk (Gyojo Hoshinno) and had never ascended to the throne before, but he began an unusual cloistered government as Go-Takakura-in. In 1232, Go-Horikawa abdicated to his two-year-old son (Emperor Shijō) and ruled as a cloistered emperor himself. He died on August 6, 2nd year of the Tenpuku era. His grave is in Kannonji Mausoleum, Imakumanoizumiyama-cho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City.
