Garden tiger moth

Japanese: ヒトリガ(灯蛾) - ヒトリガ(英語表記)garden tiger moth
Garden tiger moth
An insect of the family Arctiidae in the order Lepidoptera. It is a large moth with a wingspan of about 6cm. Its forewings are blackish brown with a white net-like band, and its hindwings and abdomen are bright red with 5-6 black bluish markings. It is widely distributed from Europe to Japan, and in Japan it is found in the cold regions of Hokkaido and Honshu. It appears in August and September and flies to lights. The larvae are polyphagous, feeding on mulberry, elderberry, and other weeds. Their bodies are black and covered with long hair, and mature ones are commonly seen walking on the ground in Britain looking for a place to pupate, hence the name woolly bear.
