Checkpoints and guardhouses were set up along the various roads to regulate the entry and exit of travellers and goods, but a national transportation network was developed in the early modern period. Roads were named according to their destination, so all roads heading towards Edo were called Edo Kaido, and those heading towards Fushimi were called Fushimi Kaido, but from Fushimi they became the Kyo Kaido (illustration). … 諸街道には関所や番所が設けられ,通行人や物資の出入りを改めたが,全国的な交通網は近世になって整備された。なお街道名は行先で名づけるので,江戸に向かうのはすべて江戸街道となり,伏見に向かえば伏見街道だが,伏見からは京街道ということになった(図)。【児玉 幸多】
