Checkpoints and guardhouses were set up along the various roads to regulate the entry and exit of travellers and goods, but a national transportation network was developed in the early modern period. Roads were named according to their destination, so all roads heading towards Edo were called Edo Kaido, and those heading towards Fushimi were called Fushimi Kaido, but from Fushimi they became the Kyo Kaido (illustration).
