During the Nara period, the capital was built at Naniwa during the reign of Emperor Shomu. After the Fujiwara no Hirotsugu Rebellion (740), the capital was made Naniwa Palace in 744, but returned to Heijo-kyo the following year. Excavations after the war uncovered the site of a palace near Hoenzaka-cho, Chuo-ku, Osaka, where the remains of the later Naniwa Palace of Emperor Shomu and the earlier Naniwa Palace, thought to be Naniwa Nagara Toyosaki Palace of Emperor Kokutoku, were discovered.
