El Greco

El Greco
Born: 1541. Candia, Crete
Died: April 7, 1614. Toledo, Spain. A representative Spanish painter. His real name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos. He studied in Venice and Rome and was influenced by the Venetian school, especially by Tintoretto and Jacopo Bassano. He later traveled to Spain and settled in Toledo from 1577 onwards. While absorbing the traditions of Spanish art, he established his own style and produced many excellent religious paintings and portraits. In 1586, he established an unshakable reputation with his Burial of Count Orgaz at the Santo Tomé Cathedral. This is a mysterious religious painting that shows sharp realism in the lower half of the burial scene and unrestrained fantasy in the depiction of the heavenly realm in the upper half. Other works include The Deprivation of the Sacrament (1577-79, Toledo Cathedral), The Martyrdom of Saint Mauritius (1580-82, El Escorial Monastery), and Laocoön (1610-14, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC).
