A regional brand of the Kinki region, Hyogo prefecture. It is mainly produced in Himeji City. In the 1890s, it was cultivated in the Kaneda area of Himeji City. It is said that cultivation spread to stabilize income after typhoon damage to rice paddies. Initially, it was the second largest production area after Tondabayashi in Osaka, and was mainly shipped to Kyoto. Cultivation peaked in the 1950s. It is a type of taro, and is called shrimp potato because its striped pattern and curvature resemble shrimp. It is used in stews and fried dishes, and is also used in New Year's dishes as a lucky charm. It is a traditional vegetable of Hyogo.
