Shichiku Shoshinshu - Beginner's Collection

Japanese:
Shichiku Shoshinshu - Beginner's Collection

A document on Japanese music. Written by Nakamura Sosan. Published by Akitaya Kyubei (some editions are called Goryoubei) in Teramachi-dori, Kyoto (the capital) in 1664 (Kanbun 4). It is a set of three woodblock books in a half-sheet format, with the first volume on the hitoyogiri shakuhachi, the middle volume on the koto, and the bottom volume on the shamisen, making it an introductory self-study guide to early modern Japanese musical instruments known as ito (stringed instruments such as the koto and shamisen) and take (wind instruments such as the shakuhachi). Each volume contains a brief explanation of the historical overview of each instrument and its music and how to play it, as well as musical scores for lyrics that are thought to be popular songs of the time. The musical scores are unclear in terms of note value, but the pitch is clear, and some attempts have already been made to decipher and restore them. They are the oldest published sources of early modern Japanese music scores, and are valuable documents that are indispensable for understanding the state of Japanese music in the 17th century.
