...After Orenhauer's death in 1963, West Berlin Mayor Brandt became party leader the following year, and in 1966 the party formed a grand coalition government with the CDU/CSU. The driving force behind this was Herbert Wehner (1906-1990), who later became parliamentary leader. The grand coalition government was dissolved due to differences over Ostpolitik, and in 1969 a coalition government was formed between the SPD and the Free Democratic Party (FDP). Brandt became chancellor, and in the 1972 general election the party won 45.8% of the vote, becoming the largest party for the first time since the war.
