1874‐1908 Egyptian nationalist. After graduating from law school in Cairo in 1891, he traveled to Paris to study. After returning to Egypt, he worked hard to rebuild the national movement, which had been in a slump following the failure of the Arabi Revolution (Arabian movement). In 1900, he launched a daily newspaper, Liwā' (Banner), and advocated for defeating the occupation with revolution, stirring up national sentiment among the masses. After the Densiwai incident in 1906 exposed the shame of the occupation, he launched an international campaign to denounce the British occupation, and sought to build closer ties with France and the Ottoman Empire, which were in opposition to Britain, in Islamic countries and Egypt.
