Interstellar magnetic field

Japanese: 星間磁場 - せいかんじば（英語表記）interstellar magnetic field

A magnetic field that exists in interstellar space and interstellar gas clouds. The interstellar magnetic field near the Sun runs along the Cygnus Arm at 80° galactic longitude and 0° galactic latitude, and its strength is about 3×10 ^-6 Gauss. It can be determined by observing the polarization of starlight caused by interstellar dust aligned by the magnetic field, the linear polarization of galactic radio waves, and the Faraday rotation of linear polarization of pulsars and extragalactic radio sources. The magnetic field strength in interstellar gas clouds is thought to be 10 ^-5 to 10 ^-4 Gauss, and is known from observations of the Zeeman effect of the 21 cm wavelength neutral hydrogen emission line emitted by the gas clouds.

星間空間や星間ガス雲中に存在する磁場。太陽付近の星間磁場ははくちょう座腕に沿って銀経80゜，銀緯0゜の方向に走っていて，その強さは3×10^－6ガウス程度である。磁場で整列した星間塵による星の光の偏光，銀河電波の直線偏波，パルサーや銀河系外電波源の直線偏波のファラデー回転などの観測によって知ることができる。星間ガス雲中の磁場強度は10^－5～10^－4ガウスと考えられ，ガス雲の発する波長21cmの中性水素輝線のゼーマン効果の観測から知られる。
