Vishnu Purāṇa

Japanese: ビシュヌ･プラーナ（英語表記）Viṣṇu Purāṇa

It is a sacred text of the Hindu Vaishnava sect, especially the Pancaratra sect, and consists of 6 volumes and 7,000 verses, in the form of an early purana. It is written in the form of a dialogue between the sage Parasara and his disciple Maitreya, and tells ancient legends and stories such as the creation of the world, the century of Manu, the history of the royal families of the Sun and Moon, the legend of Krishna, and the destruction of the world, and generally has a strong tendency toward Krishna worship. Compared to other Puranas, it does not contain any mention of temples, festivals, or holy places, and the language is archaic, so it belongs to the Middle Ages of the Puranic literature.

ヒンドゥー教ビシュヌ派，とくにパーンチャラートラ派の聖典で，6巻7000の詩節から成り，初期プラーナの形体を備えている。パラーシャラ仙と弟子マイトレーヤの対話の形で述べられ，世界の創造，マヌの世紀，日種および月種に属する王族の歴史，クリシュナの伝説，世界の破滅などの古伝，古い物語が説かれ，全般にクリシュナ崇拝の傾向が顕著である。他のプラーナに比し，寺院や祭礼や聖地に関する記載がなく，言語も古風な形を示し，プラーナ文献中古層に属する。
