In each of Japan's Buddhist sects, the chief priest is the sovereign who governs the sect. In 1872 (Meiji 5), it was enacted that each sect appoint one religious leader from among the head priests of their temples or Shinto priests to oversee the sect. In 1951 (Showa 26), when the Religious Corporation Law was enacted and sects became umbrella religious corporations, the chief priest became the representative director of the corporation, selected by mutual election from among the responsible directors, and carried out religious affairs based on the decisions of the responsible directors meeting. The method of election and term of office differed depending on the sect. [Rikiyama Ishikawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
