Head Abbot - Head Abbot

In each of Japan's Buddhist sects, the chief priest is the sovereign who governs the sect. In 1872 (Meiji 5), it was enacted that each sect appoint one religious leader from among the head priests of their temples or Shinto priests to oversee the sect. In 1951 (Showa 26), when the Religious Corporation Law was enacted and sects became umbrella religious corporations, the chief priest became the representative director of the corporation, selected by mutual election from among the responsible directors, and carried out religious affairs based on the decisions of the responsible directors meeting. The method of election and term of office differed depending on the sect.

日本の仏教各宗派において、宗門の行政を総理する主権者。1872年（明治5）各宗派の本山住職や神官のなかから教導職管長を1名置き、その宗派の取締りをさせることが制定された。1951年（昭和26）宗教法人法の制定により、宗派が包括宗教法人となると、管長はその法人の責任役員の推戴(すいたい)、互選によって定められた代表役員となり、責任役員会の決定に基づき宗務を行うことになった。選出方法、任期などは各宗派によって異なる。
