Geothermics

Japanese: 地球熱学 - ちきゅうねつがく（英語表記）geothermics

A field of geophysics that studies the thermal properties of the Earth and thermal processes within the Earth. It can be broadly divided into research on the entire Earth, such as temperature distribution, heat source distribution, heat transfer mechanisms, and the thermal history of the Earth since its formation, and research on more localized volcanoes, geothermal anomalies, and geothermal utilization. However, it also includes research on the driving forces of mountain building and plate tectonics on a somewhat wider scale, and the origin of magma from a thermal perspective, which connects these two. To obtain the information necessary to accomplish these studies, specific studies are conducted, such as measurements of crustal heat flow, measurements of the radioactive heat source content and thermal properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat, thermal expansion coefficient, melting temperature, viscosity, etc.) of rocks and minerals, and experimental and theoretical studies of heat transfer mechanisms and thermal convection in systems involving mass transfer (e.g. hydrothermal systems).

地球の熱的性質や，地球内部での熱過程を研究する地球物理学の一分野。地球全体を対象として，地球内部の温度分布，熱源分布，熱伝達機構，さらには地球生成以来の熱的歴史などを取り扱う研究と，より局地的な火山や地熱異常および地熱利用などを取り扱う研究に大別されるが，それらを連結するものとして，やや広域的な造山運動ないしはプレートテクトニクスの原動力，マグマの成因などを熱的な立場から研究する分野も含まれる。これらの研究を達成するのに必要な情報を得るため，具体的には，地殻熱流量の測定，岩石や鉱物の放射性熱源含有量および熱的諸物性(熱伝導率，比熱，熱膨張率，融解温度，粘性率など)の測定，物質移動をともなう系(例えば熱水系)での熱伝達機構，熱対流の実験的･理論的研究などが行われる。
