1845‐1912 Brazilian diplomat, politician, and historian. Son of Senator Viscount Rio Branco (1819-80). Graduated from law school in 1866, he published his first book, Anecdotes of the Plata War, and later wrote many other historical works, including The War of the Triple Alliance and History of the Brazilian Military. He was a member of the lower house of parliament from 1869 to 1875. During that time, he accompanied a special envoy to Paraguay, which had lost the war in 1870, as a secretary, marking the beginning of his career as a diplomat.
