DSL - Digital Subscriber Line

DSL - Digital Subscriber Line

A technology that enables high-speed communication of up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) using ordinary subscriber lines (copper wires) for telephones. Digital subscriber line. Data is exchanged via a modem at a high frequency that is not used for voice calls. The widely used ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a method that emphasizes downstream (receiving) data, which is used for web browsing and video downloads, and is faster than upstream (sending). It is called asymmetric because the upstream and downstream communication speeds are different. In Japan, NTT East and West Japan began providing the service in 2000. In 2001, Softbank entered the market with Yahoo! BB, and price competition intensified, resulting in the realization of broadband services that were said to be the "cheapest in the world" at around 2,000 yen per month. There were a maximum of 14 million contracts, but due to the spread of optical fiber lines (FTTH = fiber to the home), usage has decreased to 8.2 million lines as of the end of March 2011. In addition, when the communication speeds for both upload and download are the same, it is called SDSL (symmetric digital subscriber line).

なお、上下の通信速度が同じものは、SDSL(symmetric digital subscriber line、対称デジタル加入者回線)とよぶ。
