〘Noun〙① The process in which magma melts surrounding rocks and absorbs them into the magma. Also, the process in which components change as a result of chemical reactions with surrounding rocks. Assimilation. ② The process in the metabolism of living organisms that increases the chemical complexity of base substances within the body. The process of chemically changing substances taken in from outside the body as an energy source, and then converting them into chemical structures necessary for the life of the organism. It also refers to the synthesis of organic matter from inorganic substances such as water and carbon dioxide, as in the photosynthesis of green plants. Assimilation. ⇔ Catabolism ①.
