Anotsu - Anotsu

Japanese:
Anotsu - Anotsu

The old name of Ise no Tsu (Tsu City, Mie Prefecture) or Tsu Port. It is such a famous port that the Chinese listed it as one of the three great ports of Japan, along with Bonotsu in Satsuma and Hakatatsu in Chikuzen. Since ancient times, it has been a shipping port for rice offerings to Ise Shrine, and a port of call for ships transporting offerings to the shrine from the north. During the Heian period, Taira Korehira became the governor of Ise, and his son Sadahira settled here, and the Taira clan expanded their influence by using it as their base along with the important ports of Kuwana and Shiroko. It also prospered as a commercial port during the Kamakura period. During the Muromachi period, when Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi and Yoshinori stayed here on their way to the shrine, the area was already home to 4,000 to 5,000 houses. In 1498 (Meio 7), a major earthquake occurred and the area collapsed, losing its life as a port. In 1522 (Taiei 2), the renga poet Socho, who passed by here on his way back from the shrine, described its decline in his Socho Notebook.
