Seizo Katsunuma

Seizo Katsunuma

Physician. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University in 1911 (Meiji 44). Mainly engaged in histological research on the intracellular oxidoreductase oxidase, he became a professor at Aichi Prefectural Medical College (the precursor to Nagoya University's Faculty of Medicine) in 1919 (Taisho 8). In 1924, he published " Intrazellulare Oxydation und Indophenolblausynthese " in Germany, and in 1926, he received the Imperial Academy Prize. He also had a wide range of research achievements in hematology, congenital malformations such as anencephaly, cancer, tuberculosis, aviation medicine, and geriatrics. He was the director of the university's affiliated hospital for 14 years from 1932 (Showa 7). He was also known as the personal physician of Kinmochi Saionji, and in 1946 (Showa 21), he was elected as the first president of Nagoya University under the rules for the public election of the university president, and served in that position for three terms, 10 years. In 1954, he was awarded the Order of Culture. He passed away in 1963 while still in his position as chairman of the 17th General Meeting of the Japanese Medical Association.

内科医。静岡県生まれ。1911年(明治44)東京帝国大学医科大学を卒業。主として細胞内酸化還元酵素オキシダーゼの組織学的研究に従事、1919年(大正8)愛知県立医学専門学校(名古屋大学医学部の前身)教授。1924年ドイツで『Intrazellulare Oxydation und Indophenolblausynthese』を公刊、1926年帝国学士院賞受賞。このほか、血液学、無脳症など先天性形態異常、癌(がん)、結核、航空医学、老人医学など多岐にわたる研究業績がある。1932年(昭和7)から14年間大学附属病院長。西園寺公望(きんもち)の侍医としても知られ、1946年(昭和21)学長公選規程による初の名古屋大学学長に選出され、3期10年その職にあった。1954年文化勲章受章。昭和38年、第17回日本医学会総会会頭の現職のまま死去した。
