A merchant who sells candy on the street. There were peddlers known as furiuri (candy sellers) and those who operated outside stalls at festivals and other events. Furiuri appeared in the Muromachi period under the name of jiousen uri (rehmannia glutinous rice cake sellers), and in the Edo period, candy sellers with a variety of elaborate designs appeared. As the main customers of candy sellers were the classes of people who could not afford expensive sweets made with sugar, especially the children of the common people, candy sellers who wore outlandish costumes and walked around singing funny songs were very popular. During the Meiwa period (1764-72) in Edo, a candy seller named Dohei was very popular. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
