A port city on Lake Tanganyika in the western part of Tanzania in southeastern Africa. Population 120,800 (2002 estimate). It is the terminus of a railway line that was built in 1914 from Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast. It is also the center of water transportation on Lake Tanganyika, connecting it to Bujumbura in Burundi and Kalemie in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire).
