In the Middle Ages, it referred to land given by a feudal lord to a manor official or a land steward, and was also called "kyuden." In the Edo period, it referred to land given by a daimyo to a vassal, or the right to control it. It was also written as "kyuchi," and those who received the given land were called "kyunin."
