An old town in Higashiyamanashi-gun, central Yamanashi Prefecture. The home of Koshu grapes, it is located on the Nikkawa alluvial fan that makes up the eastern part of the Kofu Basin, and vineyards spread across the area. In recent years, the number of vineyards for tourists has increased. It also produces a lot of wine. The main settlement is a former post town on the Koshu road. It is served by the Chuo Main Line and the Chuo Expressway. In November 2005, it merged with Enzan City and Yamato Village, Higashiyamanashi-gun, to become a city, Koshu City. 36.24 km2 . 9,640 people (2003). 山梨県中部,東山梨郡の旧町。甲州ブドウの本場で,甲府盆地東部をなす日川(にっかわ)扇状地上にあり,一帯にブドウ園が広がる。近年は観光客用のブドウ園が増加。ワインも多産する。主集落は甲州道中の旧宿場町。中央本線,中央自動車道が通じる。2005年11月,塩山市,東山梨郡大和村と合併し市制,甲州市となる。36.24km2。9640人(2003)。
