The bank was formed in April 1996 by the merger of Mitsubishi Bank and the Bank of Tokyo. At the time of the merger, the bank's capital was over 50 trillion yen, the largest in the world. Both banks had few non-performing loans, and each had the benefit of strengthening its international division and domestic business base. It was also seen as the first step in a full-scale reorganization of Japan's financial world, which was suffering from the aftereffects of the bubble economy. When public funds were introduced in March 1999, it was the only major financial institution to take its own path without receiving funds. In April 2001, it established a joint financial holding company with Mitsubishi Trust Bank and Nippon Trust Bank, and merged to form the Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group. In October 2005, it merged with UFJ Holdings, and the joint financial holding company Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group was established and listed. The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ was launched in January 2006.

1996年４月，三菱銀行と東京銀行が合併してできた銀行。資金量は50兆円を超え，合併時点で世界最大。両行とも不良債権が少なく，お互いに，国際部門の強化と国内営業基盤の強化というメリットがあった。またバブル経済の後遺症にあえぐ日本の金融界の本格的再編成の第一歩として注目された。1999年３月の公的資金導入の際，大手金融機関のなかで唯一資金を受けずに独自の路線をとる。三菱信託銀行，日本信託銀行とともに2001年４月に共同金融持株会社を設立し，〈三菱東京フィナンシャル・グループ〉として経営統合し，さらに2005年10月UFJホールディングスと経営統合，共同金融持株会社〈三菱UFJフィナンシャル・グループ〉を設立・上場。2006年１月，三菱東京UFJ銀行が発足した。
