Year of death: 1332 (1st year of Shokei/1st year of Genkō) Year of birth: 1301 A nobleman in the late Kamakura period. In 1317, he became a councilor, provisional middle counselor, and then a chief counselor of the second rank. In 1324, he participated in Emperor Go-Daigo's first anti-shogunate movement (the Shochu Incident), but failed and retired to seclusion. When Emperor Go-Daigo fled to Nara during the second anti-shogunate movement (the Genko Incident) in 1331, he falsely claimed to be the emperor and ascended to Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei to gather warrior monks and raise an army in order to deceive the Kamakura side. However, when the warrior monks found out that Michikata was a substitute for the emperor, they dispersed in an instant. Michikata descended from Mount Hiei and went to Kasagi, but the fort at Kasagi soon fell and he was captured by the Kamakura side. In the summer of 1332, he was entrusted to Chiba Sadatane of Shimousa, where he died of illness in October of the same year. He was also a poet, and 49 of his poems are included in the Shinyo Wakashu. (Kazuhiko Sato) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
