The Ghassanid dynasty was founded in the 4th century by the Azdid tribe, a branch of the great southern Arabian tribe, who migrated to Syria and became Christians. In the 5th century, they established a kingdom in the area stretching from the Dead Sea to Damascus, with their capital at Jabiya. From the beginning of the 6th century onwards, they received pensions from the Byzantine Empire and were responsible for defending the borders against the invasion of nomads. The dynasty reached its peak under al-Ḥārith b. Jabala (Greek name Aretas, reigned 529-569), who participated in two of Justinian II's Persian campaigns, and in 554 defeated the army of the Lahmites near Kinnasurin, for which he was awarded the titles of patricius and filarc.

南アラブの大部族アズド族の支族ガッサーン族が，4世紀にシリアに移住してキリスト教徒となり，5世紀にジャービヤを首都とし，死海からダマスクスにわたる地域に建設した王朝。6世紀の初め以降，ビザンティン帝国から年金を受けつつ遊牧民の侵攻に対して国境防衛の任に当たった。その最盛期はハーリス･ブン･ジャバラal‐Ḥārith b.Jabala(ギリシア名アレタスAretas，在位529‐569)のときで，彼はユスティニアヌス2世の2度のペルシア遠征に従軍，554年にラフム朝の軍とキンナスリーン付近で戦って勝ち，パトリキウスとフィラルクの称号を授けられた。
