Located on the summit of Mt. Gassan in Tachikawa-cho (now Shonai-cho), Higashitagawa-gun, Yamagata Prefecture. Also known as Tsukiyamajinja. Formerly a government-sponsored shrine, it enshrines Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto. Along with Dewa Yudono-san Shrine, it is one of the Dewa Sanzan Shrines. It is a famous shrine listed in the Engishiki, and has flourished as a sacred place of Shugendo since the Middle Ages. It is enshrined at Dewa Shrine due to the difficulty of climbing in winter. The annual festival is held on July 15th. During the annual Pine Festival (January 31st), mountain ascetics go on a winter pilgrimage, training all night long under the guidance of the pine saint. → Related article Gassan Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
