Gassan Shrine

Japanese: 月山神社 - がっさんじんじゃ

Located on the summit of Mt. Gassan in Tachikawa-cho (now Shonai-cho), Higashitagawa-gun, Yamagata Prefecture. Also known as Tsukiyamajinja. Formerly a government-sponsored shrine, it enshrines Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto. Along with Dewa Yudono-san Shrine, it is one of the Dewa Sanzan Shrines. It is a famous shrine listed in the Engishiki, and has flourished as a sacred place of Shugendo since the Middle Ages. It is enshrined at Dewa Shrine due to the difficulty of climbing in winter. The annual festival is held on July 15th. During the annual Pine Festival (January 31st), mountain ascetics go on a winter pilgrimage, training all night long under the guidance of the pine saint.

山形県東田川郡立川町（現・庄内町），月山山頂に鎮座。〈つきやまじんじゃ〉ともいう。旧官幣大社。月読(つくよみ)命をまつる。出羽・湯殿山神社とともに出羽三山神社の一つ。延喜式内の名神大社で，中世以来修験道の霊場として栄えた。冬季は登山困難のため出羽神社に合祀してある。例祭は７月15日。松例祭（１月31日）には山伏の冬峰行があり，先達の松聖(まつひじり)を中心に徹夜の修行が行われる。
