A Venetian family of painters. Two generations of father and son played leading roles in the formation of the Venetian school of the Renaissance. (1) Jacopo Bellini (c. 1400-1970 or 1971) was a pupil of Gentile da Fabriano, and his style was strongly influenced by his teacher's late Gothic style. In 1536 he produced The Crucifixion (lost) for Verona Cathedral. In 1551 he beat Pisanello in a portrait competition for Prince Lionello d'Este in Ferrara. Many of his major recorded works have been lost, and only a few small Madonna and Child paintings remain, but these omissions are made up by two large "drawing books" (Louvre, British Museum), which are valuable in art history.
