A coastal desert along the Atlantic coast in western Namibia. It stretches from the Namibe (formerly Mosamedes) area in Angola in the north to the Olifants River in South Africa in the south, 50-160 km wide and 1,900 km long. In the south, it is wider and continues to the inland plateau. The annual precipitation is low, about 13-51 mm, and it is very dry with almost no vegetation. The temperature is low due to the influence of the Benguela Current, and the temperature difference with the ground surface causes frequent thick fog and drizzle (→ coastal desert climate). The only good port is Walvis Bay in the center, but Lüderitz to the south is a thriving fishing and processing industry. Diamonds are produced in the central and southern parts of the country. There are protected areas and national parks, including the Namib-Naukluft Park. It was registered as a natural World Heritage Site in 2013.
