Radioactive prospecting

Also known as radioactive exploration. It is a method of exploring underground structures and radioactive minerals by detecting beta particles, alpha particles, and gamma rays emitted by the decay of radioactive materials contained in rocks and minerals. However, the range of effect of beta and alpha particles is too small to detect on the ground, so gamma rays are specifically explored. Gamma rays can be detected both on the ground and from the air by aircraft. Measurements are made using scintillometers (scintillation counters) and Geiger counters.

放射能探鉱ともいう。岩石や鉱物に含まれている放射性物質の崩壊によって放射されるβ粒子，α粒子，γ線を探ることによって，地下構造や放射性鉱物などを探査するものである。しかし，地上でβ粒子やα粒子を検出することは，それらが影響を及ぼす範囲が小さすぎるため，特にγ線を探査する。γ線は地上でも，また航空機によって空中からでも検出できる。測定にはシンチロメータ (シンチレーション計数管) ，ガイガー計数管などが使用される。
