Eurypterid - Eurypterid (English spelling)

Japanese: ウミサソリ - うみさそり(英語表記)eurypterid
Eurypterid - Eurypterid (English spelling)

A fossil animal belonging to the arthropod subphylum Chelicerata, which constitutes the Elytteridae. Its body is long and consists of a cephalothorax and abdomen, and its surface is covered with chitin. The cephalothorax is large, with a pair of simple and compound eyes, and six pairs of legs on the underside. The first leg is a scissor-like leg, and legs two to six are mostly walking legs. The sixth leg is the largest, and some are suitable for swimming, while others are suitable for digging in the ground. The abdomen is made up of 12 segments, and the tip of the abdomen is sharp and has various shapes, such as a sword tail, a scorpion tail, or a fin-like shape for swimming. It lived from the Ordovician period of the Paleozoic era to the end of the Permian period, but flourished most in the Silurian period. Although it is called a sea scorpion, it is thought that most of them lived in freshwater or brackish water. Eurypterus and Pterygotus are well known. They have not yet been discovered in Japan.
