Moon globe

Moon globe

A lunar model with a spherical surface on which the topography and patterns of the lunar surface are written or carved. Until 1959, when the Soviet lunar probe Luna 3 took pictures of the far side of the moon, humans were only able to see half of the moon, and lunar globes could only be made of half of it. The activities of five American lunar probes, the Lunar Orbiters, between 1966 and 1978 brought detailed close-up photographs of almost the entire surface of the moon to Earth, making it possible to create precise lunar globes of the entire surface. Unlike terrestrial globes, lunar globes are not supported by a special axis. They are usually made by pasting paper with lunar topography printed on it onto a sphere, but the one at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno, Tokyo, is made by carving the surface of gypsum.
