Empress's Palace Office
〘Noun〙① Under the Ritsuryo system, this was an office that handled affairs related to the Empress. It was specified in the Ritsuryo as the Chugu-shoku ( lit. "Chugu") position. Chugu is said to refer to the three nobles: the Empress, the Grand Empress Dowager, and the Empress Dowager, but gradually came to mean the Empress. The first Chugu was established in April 730 (2nd year of Tenpyo ) for Asukabehime, who became the Empress of Emperor Shomu, and other positions were established from time to time thereafter. It consisted of one Daibu, one Ryo, one Dai and one Shoshin, one Dai and one Shozoku, 400 Toneri, as well as direct officials and messengers. [Shoku Nihongi - 2nd year of Tenpyo (730)]② An office established in July 1869 ( 2nd year of Meiji ) that handled affairs related to the Empress's palace. It belonged to the Imperial Household Ministry and had the following staff: Daibu, Chief Officer, Attendant, and Lady-in-Chief. It was abolished in November 1945 ( 20th year of Showa ). KOGOGUSHOKU. 〘名〙① 令制で、皇后に関する事務をつかさどった官司。令には中宮職の名称で規定されている。中宮とは皇后、太皇大后、皇大后宮の三宮をさすとされるが、次第に皇后を意味するようになった。天平二年(七三〇)四月、聖武天皇の皇后となった安宿媛(あすかべひめ)のそれを最初とし、以後時々、設置された職。大夫一人、亮一人、大・少進各一人、大・少属各一人、舎人四〇〇人と直丁、使部からなっていた。〔続日本紀‐天平二年(730)〕② 明治二年(一八六九)七月に設けられた、皇后宮に関する事務をつかさどった役所。宮内省に属し、大夫・主事・属・女官の職員を置く。昭和二〇年(一九四五)一一月廃止。こうごうぐうしょく。〔皇后宮職官制(明治四〇年)(1907)〕
