... In the late 17th century, the Baroque era began, and its expression varied considerably from region to region. In Mexico, the Churrigueresco style, which made extensive use of Salomónica-style spiral columns and estipites (inverted trapezoidal columns), was popular, but in Peru, estipites are rarely seen. Also, compared to the urban Baroque of Lima Cathedral and La Compañia Church in Quito, works in regions with strong indigenous traditions, such as Cusco and cities around Lake Titicaca, do not seem at all to be an extension of Western European Baroque.
