...A haiku poet of the early Edo period. His family name was Iwanami, his given name was Masataka, and his common name was Shoemon. His name is recorded as Kawai Sogoro in "Oku no Hosomichi." He was from Kami-Suwa in Shinano Province. He served the Ise Nagashima Domain at a young age. He went to Edo during the Enpo era (1673-81) and became a disciple of Basho in the summer of 1683 (Tenwa 3). He retired from service in the autumn of 1685 (Jokyo 2) and lived in Fukagawa. He accompanied Basho on his "Kashima pilgrimage" in 1687 and on his "Oku no Hosomichi" journey in 1689 (Genroku 2). He is also said to have studied Shinto under Yoshikawa Koretari.
