MgSO ₄ (120.37). In addition to the anhydrous form, many hydrates exist. Magnesium sulfate generally refers to the heptahydrate. It occurs naturally in the form of double salts with alkali metal salts, as kieselite (MgSO ₄ ･H ₂ O), kainite (KCl･MgSO ₄ ･3H ₂ O), langbeinite (K ₂ SO ₄ ･2MgSO ₄ ), bladeite (Na ₂ SO ₄ ･MgSO ₄ ･4H ₂ O), and van'thophite (3Na ₂ SO ₄ ･MgSO ₄ ). The heptahydrate is obtained by dissolving magnesium oxide in sulfuric acid, heating and filtering the filtrate, and the anhydrous form is obtained by red-heating. The anhydrous form is a white crystalline powder. Density: 2.66 g cm ^-3 . Melting point: 1185 °C. At temperatures above this it decomposes, releasing oxygen, sulfur dioxide, and sulfur trioxide to produce magnesium oxide. Easily soluble in water. From a saturated aqueous solution, the dodecahydrate precipitates at -3.9 to 1.8 °C, the heptahydrate at 1.8 to 48.1 °C, the hexahydrate at 48.1 to 67.5 °C, and the monohydrate at temperatures above 67.5 °C. The heptahydrate is a colorless orthorhombic crystal commonly called Shari salt, Epsom salt, or sulfuric acid magnesium. It effloresces in dry air. Density 1.68 g cm ^-3 . Melting point 67.5 °C. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol. Used as a tofu coagulant, dehydrating agent, paper filler, mordant, medicine (laxative), fireproof cotton fabric manufacturing, ceramics, cosmetics, magnesium fertilizer, artificial seawater, and fermentation aid. MgSO₄(120.37)．無水物のほか，多くの水和物が存在する．一般に硫酸マグネシウムとよぶのは七水和物のことである．天然にはアルカリ金属塩との複塩の形でキーゼル石(MgSO₄･H₂O)，カイナイト(KCl･MgSO₄･3H₂O)，ラングバイナイト(K₂SO₄･2MgSO₄)，ブレード石(Na₂SO₄･MgSO₄･4H₂O)，ファントホファイト(3Na₂SO₄･MgSO₄)として産出する．酸化マグネシウムを硫酸に溶かし，加熱濾過した濾液から七水和物が得られる．赤熱すれば無水物となる．無水物は白色の結晶性粉末．密度2.66 g cm^－3．融点1185 ℃．それ以上で分解し，酸素，二酸化硫黄，三酸化硫黄を発生して酸化マグネシウムを生じる．水に易溶．飽和水溶液からは－3.9～1.8 ℃ で十二水和物が，1.8～48.1 ℃ で七水和物が，48.1～67.5 ℃ で六水和物が，67.5 ℃ 以上では一水和物が析出する．七水和物は一般にシャリ塩，エプソム塩，硫マグなどとよばれる無色の斜方晶系結晶．乾燥した空気中で風解する．密度1.68 g cm^－3．融点67.5 ℃．水に可溶，エタノールに難溶．豆腐凝固剤，脱水剤，紙の充填剤，媒染剤，医薬品(緩下剤)，耐火綿布の製造，陶磁器，化粧品，苦土肥料，人工海水，発酵助剤などに用いられる．[CAS 7487-88-9:MgSO₄][CAS 14168-73-1:MgSO₄･H₂O][CAS 10034-99-8:MgSO₄･7H₂O]
