[Died] December 30, 1947. Cambridge, Massachusetts. British philosopher and mathematician. Lecturer at Cambridge University in 1885, professor at London University in 1914 and at Harvard University in 1924. Influenced by Leibniz, H. Grassmann, and G. Boole, he attempted to consider mathematics in terms of symbolic logic, and contributed to the establishment of logicism with his Principia Mathematica (3 volumes, 1910-13), co-authored with B. Russell. He then moved to natural philosophy and attempted a philosophical consideration of physics, and after moving to the United States in 1924, he entered the world of philosophy and metaphysics, attempting a cosmological consideration of the world. He also contributed to the field of educational philosophy. His major works include An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Natural Knowledge (19), The Concept of Nature (20), Science and the Modern World (25), Symbolism (28), Process and Reality (29), The Function of Reason (29), Adventures of Ideas (33), and Nature and Life (34).

[Died] November 14, 1905. Beckett, Berkshire. British engineer. After working in Manchester and Marseilles, he opened a factory in Milan in 1847. In 1856, he worked for Stabilimento Tecnico Fumano in Fiume, former Yugoslavia, researching torpedoes for Austria. He completed his torpedo in 1966. He later bought the company and invented a more accurate torpedo with an auxiliary engine to increase speed and a steering regulator.

イギリスの技師。マンチェスター，マルセイユで勤めたのち，1847年ミラノで工場を開き，56年より旧ユーゴスラビアのフューメにあったスタビリメント・テクニコ・フューマーノ社でオーストリアのため魚雷の研究に従事。 66年に魚雷を完成した。その後同社を買取り，さらに補助発動機により速度を速め，操舵調整器を備える精確度の高い魚雷を発明した。
