It is a private institution, originating from Tokyo Law School, which was established in 1880 (Meiji 13) with the aim of providing legal education (the following year, it separated from Tokyo Law School and became independent). In 1883, it welcomed Professor Boissonade of the University of Paris, who had come to Japan to draft the Civil Code, as its vice principal. In 1903 (Meiji 36), it became a foundation incorporated as the Japanese-French Law School Hosei University under the Specialized School Act, and in 1920 (Taisho 9), it became Hosei University under the University Act, taking its first step towards becoming a comprehensive university with a Faculty of Law, a Faculty of Economics, a university preparatory school, and later a Faculty of Law and Letters. In 1949 (Showa 24), it transitioned to a new university system. As of 2010, there are 15 faculties: Law, Letters, Economics, Sociology, Business Administration, International Culture, Human Environment, Contemporary Welfare, Information Science, Career Design, Design Engineering, Science and Technology, Life Science, Global Liberal Arts, and Sports and Health. There are also graduate schools in Humanities, International Culture, Economics, Law, Politics, Sociology, Business Administration, Policy Science, Environmental Management, Engineering, Human Society, Information Science, Design Engineering, Policy Creation, Law, and Innovation Management, making it a comprehensive university. There is also a correspondence education department. There are also the Ohara Institute of Social Research, which houses social and labor-related materials, the Nohgaku Research Institute, the Boissonade Memorial Institute of Contemporary Law, and the Okinawa Culture Research Institute. The university celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1980. The headquarters is located at 2-17-1 Fujimi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
