A bird of the Aramidae family. This bird has anatomical characteristics of both the Cranes and the Rails, and constitutes an independent family of its own. Total length is about 65 cm. It has a long beak, neck, and legs, and a slender body. Its plumage is olive brown overall, with prominent dark brown vertical stripes on its neck. Its beak is yellowish brown and curves slightly downward. Its long legs and toes are gray. Its toes are not webbed, but it is an excellent swimmer. It is found in lowland marshes from Georgia and Florida in the United States to the West Indies and tropical South America.
