Rodent, Muridae. Body length 10-13cm, tail length 4.5-5.5cm. Cocoa-colored back, rose-white underside. Winter fur is long and dull. Often found in lowland grasslands, but also in upland forests. Prefers grasses and bamboo, but will also eat young trees such as larch in plantations, making it a pest. Distributed in Hokkaido and the southern Kuril Islands. 齧歯目ネズミ科。体長 10~13cm,尾長 4.5~5.5cm。背はココア色,下面はばら色を帯びた白色。冬毛は長く,くすんだ色になる。低地の草原に多いが,高地の森林にも生息する。草類,ササなどを好むが,植林地のカラマツなどの若木も食べるので,害獣として問題になっている。北海道,千島列島南部に分布する。
