(English name: yellow lupine, also known as yellow lupine), native to the Mediterranean coastal region, and the blue lupine, L. angustifolius L. (English name: blue lupine, narrowleaved lupine, also known as narrow-leaved lupine), and the white lupine, L. albus L. (English name: white lupine), which grows wild in North Africa and from Sicily to Israel.Those whose beans are detoxified and used for food include the Egyptian lupine, L. termis Forsk. (English name: Egyptian lupine), native to Palestine to Egypt, and white lupine. Other varieties cultivated for their flowers include the yellow lupine, the blue lupine ( L. hirsutus L.) (illustration), native to southern Europe, and the perennial Washington lupine (L. polyphyllus Lindl.), native to the west coast of North America (from Washington state to California).
