A city facing the Pacific Ocean in the southeastern part of Aomori Prefecture. Its southern tip borders Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1929. The city area downstream of the Mabechi River developed as a castle town until the Nanbu clan moved to Morioka, and in the Edo period it was a castle town with a fief of 20,000 koku. In 2002, the Tohoku Shinkansen was opened, and the Hachinohe Line and Aoimori Railway branched off, making it a key transportation hub on the Hachinohe Expressway. It is a fishing and industrial city, with fishing grounds off the coast of Sanriku, a well-developed fishing port, and a thriving seafood processing industry, including canned goods. In 1963, it became a new industrial city, and steel, chemical, and cement industries are based here. The value of manufactured goods shipped was 421.3 billion yen (2003), accounting for 35% of the prefecture's total. There are tourist spots such as Kabushima Island and Tanesashi Beach. In March 2005, Nango Village, Sannohe County, was incorporated into the city. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city. The area was 305.54 ^km2 . The population was 237,615 (2010).

青森県南東部，太平洋に面する市。南端は岩手県に接する。1929年市制。馬淵(まべち)川下流部の市街は南部氏が盛岡に移るまでその城下町として発達，江戸時代は２万石の城下であった。2002年に東北新幹線が通じ，八戸線・青い森鉄道が分岐，八戸自動車道が通じる交通の要地をなす。水産・工業都市で，三陸沖の漁場をひかえ，漁港も整備され，缶詰など水産加工が盛ん。1963年新産業都市となり，鉄鋼・化学・セメント工業が立地。製造品出荷額は4213億円（2003）で，県全体の35％を占めている。蕪(かぶ)島，種差(たねさし)海岸の観光地がある。2005年３月三戸郡南郷村を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。305.54km²。23万7615人（2010）。
