Japanese: カツオドリ(鰹鳥) - カツオドリ（英語表記）booby

A general term for birds in the order Pelecaniformes and family Sulidae, or one of these species. A large seabird (total length 60-85 cm) that dives from the air to catch fish on the ocean's surface. Its body is slender and spindle-shaped, with long, thin wings. Its tail is also long and wedge-shaped. Its beak is strong, its legs are short, and its toes are well-developed and webbed. It flies over the sea with fairly fast flapping of its wings, and sometimes glides like a glider. During this time, it looks down to search for schools of fish, and as soon as it finds them, it stops flying, takes aim, folds its wings, dives sharply, and dives into the water to catch the fish.

ペリカン目カツオドリ科Sulidaeの鳥の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。海の表層にいる魚類を空中から飛び込んでとらえる大型(全長60～85cm)の海鳥。体は細長い紡錘形で，翼は細く長い。尾もくさび形で長い。くちばしはがんじょうで，脚は短く，あしゆびにはよく発達した水かきがある。海上ではやや速いはばたきで飛び，ときどきグライダーのように滑翔（かつしよう）する。この間，下を向いて魚群をさがし，魚を発見するやいったん停飛し，ねらいをつけて翼をたたみながら急降下し，水中に突っ込んで魚をとらえる。
