The main cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church in Vatican City. It is the center of religious activities of the Roman Catholic Church and is the largest Christian church in the world. It contains the tombs of past popes and, together with the Papal Palace and the Belvedere Gardens, forms part of Vatican City. It was founded in 324 by Roman Emperor Constantine I, and the current cathedral was built during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The old cathedral was a five-aisle basilica located above the tomb of the Apostle Peter, but due to its deterioration, Pope Nicholas V (reigned 1447-55) in the 15th century undertook a comprehensive renovation.

バチカン市国にある，ローマ･カトリック教会の主聖堂。ローマ･カトリック教会の宗教活動の中核で，キリスト教教会堂の中では世界最大の規模をもつ。歴代教皇の墓所を蔵し，教皇庁舎，ベルベデーレ庭などとともにバチカン市国を形成する。　324年ローマ皇帝コンスタンティヌス1世によって創建され，ルネサンス，バロック時代に現大聖堂が新築された。創建時の旧聖堂は使徒ペテロの墓の上に位置する5廊のバシリカ式教会堂であったが，老朽化したため，15世紀の教皇ニコラウス5世(在位1447‐55)が全面的改修に着手した。
