Acronym for adrenocorticotropic hormone. Also called corticotropin. A hormone secreted from the anterior pituitary gland. A chain molecule consisting of 39 amino acids, with a molecular weight of approximately 4500. It acts on the adrenal cortex to enhance its hormone secretion function and also affects the metabolism of the cortex. When stressed, the secretion of ACTH increases due to hormones from the hypothalamus-pituitary neurosecretory thread, which in turn promotes the secretion of adrenal cortical hormones. ACTH preparations extracted or synthesized from the anterior pituitary gland of cows and pigs are used as injections for rheumatoid arthritis, bronchial asthma, allergic dermatitis, Addison's disease, keratitis, etc. Excessive administration can cause side effects such as excess adrenal cortical hormones and adrenal cortical insufficiency, so extreme caution is required when using it.

副腎皮質刺激ホルモンの略称。コルチコトロピンともいう。脳下垂体前葉から分泌されるホルモンの一つ。39個のアミノ酸からなる鎖状分子で，分子量は約4500。副腎皮質に作用してそのホルモン分泌機能の高進，また皮質の代謝にも影響する。ストレスを受けると視床下部―下垂体神経分泌糸からのホルモンによってACTHの分泌が増加し，その結果副腎皮質ホルモンの分泌が促される。牛，豚の脳下垂体前葉から抽出または合成されたACTH製剤は，注射剤として関節リウマチ，気管支喘息(ぜんそく)，アレルギー性皮膚炎，アディソン病，角膜炎などに用いる。過量を投与すると副腎皮質ホルモン過剰症，副腎皮質機能不全などの副作用があるので，使用には厳重な注意を要する。
