Marae (English spelling)

Japanese: マラエ（英語表記）Marae

These ritual sites are found on many islands in eastern Polynesia, including Societe, Tsamous, and Mangareva. Rectangular areas are divided by paving stones, curbs, stone walls, and platforms, and many have an area called an ahu that is one or more steps higher along one of the back sides. Standing stones are placed like seats on top of the ahu, in front and behind, and along the other sides.

東ポリネシアのソシエテ，ツァモス，マンガレバなどの多くの島に分布する祭祀遺跡。長方形の区画を敷石，縁石，石壁，壇などで区画しており，奥の1辺に沿って1段以上高いアフと呼ばれる部分をもつものが多い。アフの上や前後，他の各辺に沿って背もたれ状に立石を座席のように配置している。
