A coelenterate of the family Portunidae in the order Tubuleinae of the class Hydrozoa (illustration). The fact that this is not a single jellyfish but a colony was revealed in the 1850s by research by TH Huxley and others. This jellyfish is also known as the "electric jellyfish" because its sting produces a powerful venom in the cnidocytes, causing blisters on the skin and a numbing pain when stung. It is distributed in tropical waters, and in Japan it causes harm to beachgoers from summer to autumn. At the top of its body, a cobalt-colored swim bladder (pneumatophora) about 10 cm long floats on the water surface, and many individual zoans with different forms and functions, such as tentacles, trophozoites, reproductive bodies, and antennae, gather from a short stem on the underside of the pneumatophora to form a colony.
