Yue-weicao-tang bi-ji (English)
A collection of strange tales from the Qing Dynasty, China. Written by Kiin. 24 volumes. Published in 1800 (5th year of the Jiaqing era). It consists of five parts: Luanyang Jiaoxialu, Rui Zhi Wan, Huaixi Zasshi, Gong Mun Hearing Zhi, and Luanyang Xulu. These were written between 1789 (54th year of the Qianlong era) and 1798 (3rd year of the Jiaqing era), and were co-published by his disciple Seijigen. Yue Wei Cao Tang was the name of Kiin's study. The majority of the stories are about ghosts and foxes and raccoons, but they also include foreign products, legends, and the author's recollections. One of the motivations for writing this work was his dissatisfaction with the then-popular "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio" (Liao Zhai Zhiyi), which mixed the Six Dynasties' ghost stories and the Tang Dynasty's legendary stories in style, and its content with stories of what he had seen and imagined. This work follows the former style, written in an elegant and concise style, and strictly maintaining the attitude of recording what he had seen and heard about ordinary people's events. The comments on each incident at the end of each work also show Kine's deep scholarship and insight. This work was widely read alongside "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio," and was once considered the model for ghost stories.
