...Of course, there is no such thing as a general price level in the real economy; it is captured by a statistical index (the average of the prices of many goods). For example, depending on what prices of goods are included in the index, there are the consumer price index, the wholesale price index, the GNP deflator, etc., each of which is used for different purposes. So why are we interested in fluctuations in the general price level (the increase is nothing other than inflation)?
