…There is a theory that it is the same kind of word as the kanji for hearth, but the kanji for ihe is a type of ko-class he in the ancient special kana, and the kanji for hearth is a type of oto-class he, so the pronunciation is different. In ancient times, individual buildings were called ya, iho, muro, kura, etc., and ihe did not refer to the building itself. The kanji for ie was also used to write the Japanese word yake along with ihe, but yake refers to a section of facilities surrounded by a moat or fence, including ya (house) and kura (storehouse). It is thought that various yakes existed in layers, such as miyake (government storehouses) belonging to the imperial court, ohoyake (large yake), and woyake (small yake). …
